A walk in the park is no longer a walk in the park. The kōtiro and wāhine of Wellington are in danger with the number of sexual assaults in the city increasing by nearly 50 per cent over the past 5 years.
Earlier this year, the newly formed organisation, Wellington Alliance Against Sexual Assault, held a rally where hundreds gathered on Courtenay Place to protest for a cultural shift in our city. This was a step in the right direction but there remains a mountain of work to be done.
As a community, we simply cannot let these statistics continue to rise. Women are tired. Tired of living in fear. Tired of having to plan their daily commute down to the minute. Tired of wielding their housekey like a knife as they walk down a dimly lit street.
New Zealand has a history of leading the world in the quest for social harmony - let‘s continue to harness this strength and fight to implement necessary change.

I want to take a nice walk in the park, don‘t you?
